Kansas City Fed President Thomas Hoenig said markets need to be “cautious” about what monetary policy can accomplish, the non-voting Fed member said in a speech in Brazil.
“There is too much burden on monetary policy” in dealing with financial market crisis, Hoenig said, adding that market participants should consider the consequences of “excessive reliance” on monetary policy.
Hoenig called for “sweeping changes” in banking regulations following the subprime mortgage crisis which emerged late in the summer of 2007.
Hoenig also commented on the TAF auction, which saw its limits expanded on Friday. He said officials should consider making the auctions permanent.
