Wir sind Belohnungs-Junkies auf der ständigen Suchen nach dem nächsten Kick. Da bieten die "Errungenschaften" des Kollektivismus kurzfristig die besten Möglichkeiten.

A thorough study of the brain and its evolution, which themselves can go on nearly forever in detail, is the most important step in understanding our current predicament. Humans and their brains are basically highly evolved reward seeking structures (and danger avoiding) and they’re really very simple and understandable, but more elaborate than other organisms. The elaboration into systematicity like that found in cells and organisms has all occurred because of the plasticity of their brain evolution to take on the RNA function in manipulating information and creating tools. Unfortunately the old dopamine/opioid system is still intact and compels us to use our tools to convert everything (fossil fuels, soils, ecosystem) into a feel good lever press and the manufacturing and distribution infrastructure to accomplish the task. We have even put ourselves into technological cells (for various reasons). Unfortunately we do not like being just another organism and living within the constraints of the ecosystem. Instead we’re rushing headlong into oblivion chasing our dreams, which happen to be incompatible with organic life and the ecosystem.
I think mankind will continue to press the pleasure levers even as the electric shocks on the bottom of the cage come intermittently from the environment. The species will try to build a platform above the floor of the cage so as to continue hitting the lever while avoiding the chaos unleashed by his uncontrolled growth. In the end the rats will be pushing each other off the platform to avoid the shocks to get the last remaining pleasure as resources dwindle. I agree with the German writer, we should probably get rid of the artificial levers and get out of the cage, but reason does not control our actions.
I must add that it does not help that one of our most enjoyable activities, accomplished without technological assistance, is reproduction. Unrestrained growth in population only increases the size and scope of the metabolic technological machinery to which each human wants to be connected.

Edit: @Zara: Never to forget, that even the ‘woken up’ may not really want to depart of the leisurely benefits of the modern world…. (which may include myself).
